Create an Exploratorium Not a Dungeon: Reasons Why Physical Punishment is Not the Answer

It amazes me that this far into the 21st century, coaches still believe that doing physical punishment is a valuable use of their limited training time. I addressed this over a decade ago in "Coaching the Human Animal," but as an administrator in the 25,000 plus strong closed group of Volleyball Coaches and Trainers group, it keeps coming back in various forms – most recently in an anonymous coach post asking in essence, how many suicide runs in a practice would be considered excessive. John Kessel shares why physical punishment is not the answer.

JVA Raises $20,000 for the Side-Out Foundation at the JVA World Challenge

The JVA is a proud supporter of the Side-Out Foundation and the Dig Pink® Program. Every year the JVA commits to raising funds for the Side-Out Foundation in order to support research specifically for patients with metastatic breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease, and the least funded area of research. We are excited to share that through our efforts at the 2023 JVA World Challenge April 14-16th we were able to raise a record breaking $20,000 donated directly to the Side-Out Foundation’s Dig Pink Campaign to help save lives.

Recruiting Solutions: April Qualifiers Bring May Maintenance

May is a great month to assess and maintain the recruiting process. Many clubs have limited weekends of play in May and will train more in the gym to prepare for June championships. Here are ways volleyball student athletes can be proactive in the month of May to move their recruiting process along.

Club Training Model for the End of Season

Teams who are attending Nationals in June have the month of May and much of June to prep for a Championship. However, the girls' indoor season can take a toll on the mind and the body, so May is a great time to give your teams a week or two of down time.  Here is a club training model that shares what concepts to focus on during the end of the season, along with some drills to train those concepts, and a sample practice plan.

Beach Solutions: Cohesion and Flexibility with Indoor Leads to Success
Madsand's success is a testament to the benefit of indoor and beach programs working together for the greater good of the athletes. Madsand Beach started in 2017 with less than 10 athletes training with Founder Will Buchanan, who recognized the value in offering a beach program to compliment indoor training, and keep current Madfrog athletes training at their club year-round. Madfrog Club Director and Owner Stefanie Rotunno-Samuels was supportive of the beach program from the beginning, and saw it as another avenue for their club's athletes to pursue playing at the collegiate level. Today, Madsand is one of the largest and most successful beach programs in the country.
Self Care for Coaches and Athletes

The key aspect of a self-care plan is to recognize that we have to show ourselves the same compassion we show our athletes, and our athletes show their peers, when engaging in their plan. There will be weeks where we don’t feel like engaging in our planned activities because they feel daunting, we lack the energy, etc.
Here's some advice for coaches and athletes to get through these times.

In this week's JVA Coach to Coach Video of the Week powered by Netlynx Sports VCNebraska's Blake Rawlins (Lincoln, NE) shares specific technique for training setting footwork and handwork when setting outside and back sets.
